Congress must pass the CRA to reverse illegitimate repeal
Gizmodo has obtained internal emails that prove once and for all that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) intentionally misled journalists about a alleged DDoS attack that prevented net neutrality supporters from submitting comments immediately following viral segments of the issue by comedian John Oliver.
Fight for the Future has played a leading role debunking the FCC’s dubious claims about these attacks, and shining a light on the rampant issues of fraud and abuse that have plagued Ajit Pai’s agency’s net neutrality repeal process. The group released the following statement, which can be attributed to deputy director, Evan Greer (pronouns: she/her):
“This is a smoking gun. The FCC lied to reporters, and to Congress, in order to obscure the fact that they utterly failed to maintain a legitimate public comment process, as they are legally required to do, in their net neutrality repeal proceeding.
Overseeing the FCC is Congress’ job. They need to do their job and pass the Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution to reverse the agency’s illegitimate and unpopular decision. Voters from across the political spectrum overwhelmingly oppose the gutting of net neutrality. No one wants their cable company controlling what they can see and do on the Internet.
Inaction is unacceptable. Any member of Congress who remains silent and fails to sign the discharge petition should prepare to face the Internet’s wrath come election time.”
Fight for the Future and other groups are planning mass online actions to coincide with the official date that the FCC repeal goes into effect.
STOP WHAT YOU’RE DOING AND LOOK AT THIS PHOTO!!!!!!!
GUYS! WE DID IT!!!
WRONG.
What is happening is Senate Democrats (+ an Independent and a Republican) are pushing for a vote to repeal the original decision.
NOTHING HAS CHANGED.
THEY ARE SHORT ONE VOTE.
REPUBLICANS ARE STILL SET TO WIN BY ONE VOTE. (50-49)
CALL YOUR SENATORS.
Net Neutrality has a sliver of a chance, but if the repeal doesn’t pass it all ends on June 11th. Voting will be taking place sometime next week (May 14-18, 2018) on the repeal.
It’s looking very very very slim. Even if the vote DOES end up in our favor, it still has to go through the House. Please call your Reps.
Text “RESIST” to 50409 to send an email to your Senators/Representatives! Tell them to vote for the CRA and give them details to persuade them on why Net Neutrality is so important and why it should be preserved. You can also call at 202-224-3121.
Script for phone calls:
Now get to it!! We only have until April 23rd to keep our Internet freedom otherwise.
The following is a caption of the image above:
[Call Your Senators about Markey’s Net Neutrality Petition
(2/26):
You: Hello, my name is [insert name here]. I am calling from
[zip code].
You: I am calling to let [SENATOR] know I want them to vote
in favor of Senator Markey’s resolution to repeal the FFC’s December decision
to unwind Net Neutrality via the Congressional Review Act.
You: Polling Suggests 60-80% of Americans do not support the
rollback of Net Neutrality, and voting in support of this bipartisan resolution
will help ensure this issue isn’t singlehandedly decided by five people.
For GOP Senators: If
[SENATOR] doesn’t support Markey’s resolution, we will make this an issue every
single time [SENATOR] is up for reelection.
I’m praying the success of the vote in California will embolden other states supporting NN (like my own) to follow suit.
According to battleforthenetonly one vote is needed to ensure the FFC repeal of Net Neutrality is knocked down in the Senate, so calling the Senators who have not voted on the issue of Net Neutrality is crucial.
Additionally, battleforthenet states that 218 votes are needed to sway the House (of Representatives). As of now, 161 is the current tally, with only 57 votes needed to turn things around.
As of April 17, 2018, there are six days left before April 23, 2018.
I know many of you are saying “how many times are we gonna have to do this”
once more.
Once more.
This is the last chance to preserve Net Neutrality on the federal level.
I haven’t done an update on Net Neutrality in a while as I was trying to find a reasonable “next step”, especially since it’s been out of the “news cycle” for a bit. Well, I have some good news.
According to the senator (minority leader Chuck Schumer) from New York, they now have a total of 50 votes for a Senate resolution of disapproval that would restore the Open Internet Order of 2015 and deliver a stiff rebuke to Ajit Pai and other Republican members of the FCC. It would also prevent the agency from passing a similar measure in the future, all but guaranteeing Net Neutrality is permanently preserved
What’s stopping them now? They need just ONE more Republican and they have less than 30 days to do it.
So goes the next actionable step. You have to contact your senators and get them to suppose the Congressional Review of “the Open Internet Order of 2015″.
2) Via https://resist.bot/ – you can write to Congress using this site or Text RESIST to Resistbot on Telegram, Messenger, or to 50409 on SMS. By providing basic information, you can write your Senator to move forward.
Now, if you got a Democratic Senator, push them on to find that one Republican Senator. If you got a Republican Senator, encourage them to reconsider their stance on Net Neutrality.
We just need ONE Republican Senator and we have less than 30 days to do so.
Ftr if the net neutrality decision doesn’t get revoked by the courts or Congress then what’s going to happen is that nothing will happen for months or years and all of the telecoms companies are going to act like people were making a fuss over nothing. Then later down the line once everyone has stopped being up in arms about the issue they’ll slowly start to add fastlane/slowlane policies slowly and incrementally in a very subtle manner to avoid major mainstream backlash. That’ll continue until slowly a tiered internet is normalized and the precedent has been in place long enough that they will go entirely unchallenged in the future. So I know me saying this probably won’t affect things in the long term, but please don’t give up or forget about this, unless there are long term protections in place this will rot the floor out from under a fair net over time even if “nothing happens” at first.
